QUANDO LA STRADA GUARDA IL CIELO (When the road looks up to the sky). A large carpet along which the visitor can walk represents a long stretch of asphalt road is decorated with the words of the unforgettable cyclist Marco Pantani: âI go so fast uphill to make my agony shorterâ. The white letters are reminiscent of the slogans fans chalk or paint on the tarmac to encourage cyclists through the toughest stages in a race. A tragic modern hero, Marco Pantani alternated great sporting victories with bitter defeats on a human plane. In 1998 he achieved huge popularity with prestigious wins at the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia, but in 1999 his image was badly tarnished as a result of a doping scandal. From that moment on, he was abandoned both by his fans and by the mass media that had always idolised him while he was winning. He was found dead in a Rimini hotel room in 2004.
